There are few Americans that object to a civil contract for gay couples. Most dissenters object because they believe marriage is between a man and a woman and that this has been the definition for millenennia. Why don’t the states issue civil contracts for everyone, both straight and gay couples, and allow the couples to go into the private sector for the religious and secular ceremonies and celebrations? This protects everyone’s rights of conscience and religion. Government should stay out of social issues. Government’s only interests should be the legal contract between couples. Let the private sector take care of the spiritual contract between couples. We have enough division in this country. We need to unite, again, and practice tolerance or we will destroy ourselves.
